TEAM:NULC Student Ben Saville- My story

Hi, I’m Ben. I’m 17 and I’m a sports science student here at Newcastle College. I am also a 2nd dan black belt in karate and as of the first of February a member of the KUGB England Karate Squad. During my last grading, I was asked by the head instructor, to travel up to the Red Triangle Dojo in Liverpool for the England Squad trials. The overall trial lasted around 5 hours, with tests for everything, including stamina, coordination and speed and I had to compete against everyone who wanted to be in the squad. As you can imagine, I was exhausted by the end!! I will have to travel to Liverpool for training each month and I will compete in my first Grand Slam Competition in March this year. I am so pleased to be part of the squad as I always doubted my own ability but I’ve had so much support from my club members and family and I got there in the end.
Everyone at NULC Academy of Sport is very proud of Ben and achievements. We wish him the best of luck when competing and training for England.

Well done Ben!!

Ben is 2nd on the left.

STARS LAUNCH NIGHT AT NULC WITH OLYMPIAN BETH TWEDDLE!

On Wednesday 20 March 120 athletes and parents attended the North Staffordshire STARS event at NULC.  STARS squad members are pupils aged from 11-16 who attend a North Staffordshire school and are national standard in their sport.  The City of Stoke Gymnastics Club elite squad also attended the evening.  Two workshops were put on to inspire and inform the young athletes in their future career.

BRIAN BARTON is a national trainer with UK Anti Doping and worked at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and is a former coach for British Cycling.  He delivered a session about drugs in sport and the testing procedure.  It was very informative both for the athletes and the parents about how they will be drug tested and what supplements to avoid taking.

BETH TWEDDLE is Britain’s greatest ever female gymnast with an Olympic Bronze 2012 Medal, triple World Champion, six times European Champion, Commonwealth Champion and seven times National Champion.  We were extremely pleased for Beth to be able to come to NULC in her busy schedule.  Beth delivered an inspirational session on how she developed from being a talented youngster to becoming a World Champion and Olympic medalist.  The athletes and parents were encouraged to ask questions, as well as having photographs with Beth and her Olympic medal.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all and gave the athletes a lot of information to think about and how it relates to their own sporting careers and life.

STARS SQUAD AT THE MANCHESTER VELODROME JANUARY 2014.

25 STARS squad members visited the Manchester Velodrome for a taster session in track cycling.  Three of the squad are regular visitors there, being top level cyclists and so were able to show the rest of the squad how to conquer the steep banking at the facility.  Paige Milward got some valuable training time in ready for her competition in the national Revolution series the following weekend.

The squad were split into two groups and whilst one group got to grips with the track, the other group went to look at the BMX track, where GB athletes Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips both recently took Gold in the World Cup event.  The coach went through the basics of riding a track bike that has no brakes or gears.

All the squad performed really well on the track, despite some initial fears of riding on a banked track.  Evan had a fall from high up on the banking but despite a couple of deep grazes, carried on with the activity.

At the end of the second session, the squad were lucky enough to see Team GB take to the track for their two hour training session and watched as they warmed up and went through a variety of skills sessions.
