TEAM:NULC Sports Results: Wednesday 19th December

The year finished well yesterday as both the men’s Elite football and Performance 2 sides won in what can only be described as horrific weather and the ladies basketball team put a great fight against the number 1 ranked side in the country, Loretto.

2012 has been a fantastic year for the Academy of Sport and TEAM:NULC. A huge thank you must go out to all staff and congratulations to the students who have represented the college week-in, week-out.

Performance of the week

The performance of the week has to go to the men’s Elite Football squad who came back from 2-0 with 10 men to win 4-2 and reach the last 16 of the national cup. Well done to the lads and staff.

Elite sports students visit Birmingham University

A group of 17 Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) visited Birmingham University as part of a Sports Science Support Day.

The Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP) students went along to the Sports Science Support Workshop day on Friday 7th December to take part in a day which was organised to help them with their Sports career's.

All the students are currently part of the College’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP). The ESPP was created as part of the Academy of Sport at NULC to allow talented sportspeople to continue their academic studies, while training and competing at the highest level.

As part of the day the students took part in a number of activities including Strength and Conditioning and a talk from National level athletes currently studying at the university on scholarship programmes.

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager at NULC said: “The day at Birmingham University gave the students an excellent opportunity to take part in a number of activities which will help them to continue to excel in there chosen sport.”

Local Company Sponsor the College Basketball Programme

Newcastle-under-Lyme College's Basketball programme are celebrating after a local company pledged their support through sponsoring the Knights National league club.

Sentridge are a leading edge supplier to the industrial market. Their product portfolio includes some of the leading brands available in their field,
Sentridge are a successful business specialising in the sale, support and distribution of automation and control products used in the industry today from some of the world's leading manufacturers. Their customers include processing plants, factories large and small, machine builders, utility companies, quarries, local councils and panel builders.

The support provided by Sentridge will allow the college's very succesful basketball programme to continue developing over the next 12 months.

Shawn Jamison, head coach of the  college's Basketball Academy and Knights said "Its great that local companies see what is being achieved at the college and have chosen to support us. The help will allow us to continue playing national league, and develop the college's academy".

The college's Basketball Academy recently entered into a partnership with Stoke City FC's Premeir league 4 Sport programme, and the further help from Sentridge will allow this to flourish.

Academy of Sport Staff Visit St Georges Park

On Wednesday 31st October, 8 members of staff from the college's Academy of Sport visited the new Football Association headquarters at St Georges Park in Burton. The new £110 million facility will be the headquarters of the England national football teams, and boast facilities such as a hydro theraphy pool, 100 piece gymnasium, indoor domed pitch and over 10 football pitches.

The college staff were visiting the facilities due to a new partnership formed with the FA that will see the college hold pre-season training camps at the college in September 2013. The facilities will also be visited by students who are part of the Elite Sports Performance Programme, and football academy students will take part in the coach education programme.

Assistant Manager of the Academy, David Sutton said 'this marks the start of a great new relationship between the college and St Gorges park which will allow our students to use world class facilities'.

TEAM:NULC Sports Results- Wednesday 12th December

The weather had a devastating effect on all outdoor fixtures yesterday as only the men’s performance 2 side played at home on the 3G surface.

Indoors the college won all fronts with both the Ladies Basketball and Men’s Volleyball progressing through to the next rounds of the National Cup. The men’s basketball squad also won convincingly which amazingly means they have remained unbeaten throughout 2012!!! A great job well done.

TEAM:NULC Sports Results: 05/12/2012

It was a case of so close but yet so far yesterday as our ladies Volleyball and Basketball squads competed at the West Midlands Regional Championships. The squads did extremely well and both reached the finals of there competitions, only to be beaten in extremely narrow finals. It was a great effort by all the ladies who did the college proud, especially the basketball squad who were competing for the first ever year. Although disappointed West Midlands Runners-up is a great achievement and further enhances the college’s reputation.

Elite Sports Students Visited by Craig Heap

Students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College's Elite Sports programme were invited to a motivational talk from former olympic and commonwealth athlete Craig Heap.  
The session consisted of Craig Heap talking about his career and providing advice on elite athlete performance and motivation.  
Craig is a British gymnast who competed at the 2000 Olympics, 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games, as well as European and World  Championships.
As part of being on the Elite Sports Performance Programme students are invited to attend a number of talk presented by high level athletes who have competed at International competitions.

It was an extremely busy day again yesterday as a large number of teams played with some great successes. The men’s football, mixed volleyball and basketball eased in to the next round of the national cups pushing them further towards the final stages. The mixed volleyball side are now in the quarter finals and look on course to retain their national title.

College helps school pupils achieve their sporting dreams

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is launching a new programme to encourage more high school pupils into sport.

Part of the NULC Academy of Sport, the Newcastle STARS programme works with talented young athletes from high schools across the Borough, helping them to nurture their sporting talent while offering them the best chance of achieving their full potential.

The new programme is being launched on Thursday 29 November, 6.30pm - 8.30pm in the College’s Auditorium at its main campus on Knutton Lane.

Deb O’Neill, Newcastle STARS Squad Co-ordinator, said: “The STARS programme was put together for pupils from all Newcastle high schools that are performing at a national standard in their chosen sport. 

“As the West Midlands’ number one sports college, NULC is dedicated to raising the profile of sport and nurturing the potential of the talented young athletes we have in the local area, meaning it’s an ideal base for the STARS Squad.”

Over 100 local people have been invited to the event, along with three other STARS Squads from across Staffordshire. During the event, current Paralympian Tim Prendergast and retired Olympian Craig Heap will provide inspirational talks and workshops to the young aspiring athletes.


Previously funded by the Youth Sport Trust, the STARS programme faced funding cuts last year.

Deb added: “The funding cuts meant the programme faced an uncertain future, but the College has agreed to fund the Newcastle programme for the next year, ensuring that young local sports stars are able to receive expert coaching and access to top class sporting facilities to help them become world class athletes.”

The new programme allows the College to work with younger athletes in addition to the already successful Academy of Sport which is aimed at current college students. The NULC Academy of Sport has had record success since its launch in 2010, with students being selected to represent their country in a range of sports including Men’s Football, Ladies Football, Rugby and Netball.

Academy Open Training Nights

The Academy of Sport is hosting a number of training nights over the weeks beggining the 3rd and the 10th of December. The schedule will be as follows:

Monday 3rd December: 4.30- 6.00pm- Football and Basketball

Tuesday 4th December: 4.30- 6.00pm- Football and Rugby

Tuesday 11th December: 4.30- 6.00pm- Volleyball

Wednesday 12th December: 4.30- 6.00pm- Netball

Each of the training nights is oepn to all year 11 students who are interested in studying at Newcastle-under-Lyme College, and joining one of the Academy programmes.

The sessions will allow students to meet the coaches, new students joining them in September 2013 and the existing students.

TEAM:NULC Sports Results- Wednesday 21st November

Yesterday was again another extremely good day that further cemented Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s reputation as one of the top sports colleges in the region. At the regional championships the men’s Volleyball squad were again crowned West Midlands Champions. They will be joined at the National Championships by 3 female and 1 male cross country runners, 2 male and 2 female swimmers and the ladies football squad from last week.

Also history was made as our Ladies Basketball squad had their first ever game against St John Fisher. Although they lost it was great to see so many girls competing for the college in a new sport.

College launches partnership with Premier League 4 Sport



Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones attended Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) to highlight the importance of initiatives which encourage young people to participate in sport.

The Trinidad and Tobago international was joined by England and Manchester Giants players Devan Bailey and David Watts along with the NULC Knights basketball team for the launch of a basketball project which will now form part of the hugely-successful Premier League 4 Sport scheme that has been in operation by Stoke City Football Club for three years.

Local youngsters will be able to take part in coaching sessions across the county after basketball joined hockey, badminton, volleyball and table tennis as one of the designated activities under the Premier League 4 Sport directive.

“This is a brilliant idea from Premier League 4 Sport,” exclaimed Jones after spending much of his time at the college playing with Team GB stars and the Newcastle Knights. “It’s so important to get young people playing sport.

“I was fortunate when I was young to be able to play so many different sports in the Caribbean and I loved basketball at school, even though I didn’t take it too seriously. For me, deciding to become a footballer was the right choice.

He added: “You can see the enthusiasm of the young people and it’s fantastic that they now have this support to play the sport.” 

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager said: “Here at NULC we operate a Basketball Academy for our students and also run the Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights which is open to students and members of the community. We’re an inclusive College who with the support of Premier League 4 Sport can now offer sporting opportunities for high school pupils and members of the community to get involved in.”

The launch of the Premier League 4 Sport basketball sessions is the result of a partnership between the Stoke City Community Trust and the Newcastle Knights Basketball team supported by Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

The Academy of Sport welcomes its new apprentice

The Academy of Sport officially welcomes a new member of staff this week as a new apprentice joins the successful department. Abbie Jackson from Knutton has been taken on for 12 months to work within the Academy of Sport to provide logistical and administrative support.

Abbie is a keen sports person and plays for the college's Netball and Basketball academies whilst not working hard in the office helping to run all the Academy programmes.

Abbie will be working for 4 days a week whilst continuing her studies for the other day on an NVQ programme.

Good luck Abbie and welcome to the team!!!



Volleyball Academy benefit from the Olympics

Newcastle-under-Lyme Volleyball Academy, one of 6 in the country with national status has been given a boost after being donated a large amount of equipment that was used at the London 2102 Olympics.

The college received balls, post and net system, umpires rostrum and ball cages amongst other things. All the equipment is branded up and brings a feel of the Olympics to Newcastle-under-lyme college.

The equipment give away is part of the 2012 legacy and forms part of the National Satellite Volleyball academy programme which the college is part of in partnership with Newcastle Staffs Volleyball club.

All students are part of the colleges Elite Sports Performance Programme.
The Elite Sports Programme (ESSP) was created to allow talented athletes to continue with their academic studies, whilst training and competing to the highest level. The ESPP is open to students if they have represented the county or above in a chosen sport within the last academic year.
If students become part of the programme they can expect the following benefits
Financial support from the college for training costs, transport and essential equipment (subject to applications).
Free use of the college sports facilities such as the fitness suite and dance studio. 
University workshops at institutions such as Bath, Loughborough and Birmingham that are targeted at increasing your performance.

TEAM:NULC Regional Championship Results- Wed 14th November

Yesterday saw the college’s Ladies and Men’s 5-a-side football, netball, basketball and rugby squads taking part in the regional championships. The winners of these competitions are crowned West Midlands champions and go on to compete for the region a the national championships which take place at Bath University.

Yesterday’s results saw honours even in terms of teams that won and lost. It was a busy day as a large number of teams travelled around the West Midlands in the first round of cup fixtures.  The mixed Volleyball squad got their season up and running and I am sure the students and coaches are glad to get the first round of the cup out of the way out of the way.
