TEAM:NULC Sports Results- Wednesday 30th January 2013

It was a really good day for TEAM:NULC as all team in action won. The men's basketball squad progressed into the last 16 of the national cup and were joined by the Floodlit Football squad who beat Burton to go into the semi-final of the Midland Floodlit cup. Both the men's Elite and Performance 2 squads won to go top of their leagues.

Netball academy squad cheer on England to glory

Members of Newcastle-under-Lyme college's Netball squad travelled down to Birmingham's National Indoor Arena on Saturday to watch England play Australia in the 3rd match of the International Series. The squad, accompanied by 3 staff members enjoyed some food before they cheered on England to a 56-51 victory.

The trip is part of the wider sports offer available to students who are part of one of the colleges sports academies. Each academy has the opportunity to watch a number of high level games in their sport which will hopefully inspire and motivate them to reach their potential within their own career. The netball squad will be following up this trip with 2 more game watching Loughborough Lighting in the netball Super League.

The weather was the main winner again yesterday as only 1 sports fixture went ahead. The basketball squad continued their 2 year unbeaten run by soundly beating Birmingham Metropolitan College.

In the spotlight with...Emily Horton

Emily Horton, ages 17 from Newcastle studies A Level English Language, Psychology and PE at Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s Sixth Form Centre.
 
Emily is also an active member of the award-winning NULC Academy of Sport, where she plays for the Colleges ladies football squad.  This month Emily has been selected to play for the British Colleges Sport (BCS) England under 19’s ladies football squad.

 
Before joining NULC, Emily was a pupil at St John Fisher Catholic High School, “I enjoyed schools and did very well achieving 11 GCSE’s from grade A to C.”

 
Emily explains why she decided to join NULC after completing her GCSE’s, “I chose to come to NULC as it has a good reputation and has incredible new facilities especially for sport.”

 
“Compared to school, College is so much better, you more independence and freedom to study and there are lots of opportunities to socialise and make new friends.”

 
Asked if she would recommend NULC to young people considering Further Educations, Emily said “I would definitely recommend NULC.  The college is very modern with a relaxed atmosphere and opens up a lot of opportunities to students.  Students are encouraged to reach their potential no matter what pathway you choose.”


Emily is also a member of the Academy of Sport’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), members of which receive benefits including financial support, free use of the facilities at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre and visits to university workshops.

College students celebrate national sporting success

Three students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC) Academy of Sport have been selected to represent England by the British Colleges Sport (BCS).

Emily Horton, aged 17 from Newcastle has been selected for the English Colleges under 19’s ladies football squad, Rai Simons, aged 17, from Hanley for the English Colleges under 17 men’s football Squad, and Kieran Bedford, aged 16 from Madeley for the English Colleges under 19 men’s hockey squad.

Trevor Humphreys, Manager of the Academy of Sport said: “This selection is a testament to the hard work and dedication Emily, Rai and Kieran have put in whilst at NULC. It also highlights the College's commitment to sport and the fantastic opportunities available to students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.”

The three students fought off strong competition from students across the country and went through a number of local, regional and national trials to achieve their places on the national squads.
 
The three students also form a group of 12 students who have reached West Midlands squads, with students representing a range of sports.

The skilled students are part of the Academy of Sport’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), members of which receive benefits including financial support, free use of the facilities at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre and visits to university workshops.

Trevor added: “This recent success further enforces Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s status as the top college in the West Midlands for sport.”

The NULC Academy of Sport was awarded West Midlands College of the Year by the BCS in 2012 and had a record breaking year with a number of Academy of Sport teams competing in regional and national competitions including the ladies football, men’s basketball, netball, men’s volleyball, ladies volleyball, mixed volleyball, rugby and table tennis team’s with all teams making it through to either the finals or semi-finals. The College also had record success at the British Colleges National Cup Finals with a haul of gold and silver medals and three national champions.  .

New club logo for Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights

Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights now have their own identity after having a new club logo designed by Stoke City FC as part of the new Premier League 4 Sport partnership. Stoke City placed 3 logos on their community Facebook page and asked the general public to vote on their favourite. The new logo incorporates Newcastle-under-Lyme College colours and compliments the logo's that are currently being used.

Knights are currently doing extremely well in the England Basketball national league division 4 and are coached by former NBA and Harlem Globetrotter Shawn Jamison.

TEAM:NULC Sports Results- Wednesday 16th January

As you can imagine the college’s sports fixtures were severely disrupted by the artic like conditions yesterday. The only fixture that managed to beat the weather was the indoor netball game. The girls managed to beat Warwickshire College in the British Colleges National Cup to reach the last 16.

Hi All and a Happy New Year from the Academy of Sport staff. The college sports squads kicked off the year well yesterday in what will prove to be an extremely busy few months. All teams are battling to win league titles and are progressing well in national cups so hopefully it will prove to be another successful year.

The performance of the week has to go to the Ladies football squad who travelled to Stafford with a severely depleted squad, only to come away with a 9-1 victory. A great effort by the girls and a big thank you to the coaching staff.

College students celebrate more national sporting success

Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s Academy of Sport is celebrating as 3 more students have recently been selected for national representative squads. Emily Horton has been selected for the English Colleges under 19’s Ladies football squad, Rai Simmons for the English Colleges under 17 men’s Football Squad, and Kieran Bedford for the English Colleges under 19 Men’s Hockey Squad. All of the students went through a number of local, regional and national trials to achieve this amazing success.
The 3 students formed a group of 12 students that reached the West Midlands squads, and further re-enforces Newcastle-under-Lyme’s College’s status as one of the top in the West Midlands. A fact supported by the college being named West Midlands College of the year for 2011-12.  
All of the students form part of the Colleges Elite Sports Performance programme and regularly compete for the colleges Academy programmes.
