TEAM:NULC Sports Results: Wednesday 24th April 2013

Hi All and welcome to the business end of the season! As mentioned last week a number of sides completed their seasons on a high by winning their West Midlands leagues. It was the turn of the cups this week and sadly it seemed to be a game too far for both our men’s elite football squad and ladies football squad. The men were beaten away by Bridgwater College (Somerset) in the quarter finals of the elite play-off cup, and the ladies fell in the semi-final to Itchen College (Southampton). Both squads have had a fantastic year and should be extremely proud of what they have achieved.

On a positive note the men’s basketball squad kept up their 2 year un-beaten run to move one step closer to the title.

Next week is national cup finals week with the men’s and mixed volleyball squads, and the men’s basketball competing to become national cup winners so a massive good luck goes out to them.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights and Hoopskills host Basketball Camp

Hoopskills basketball came to the Gordon Banks Sports Centre and put on a classic basketball festival that left the youth wanting more.

Hoopskills ...along with Newcastle under Lyme College started putting on the festivals last year. The numbers at this year’s festival doubled the number from last year. Jamison who strives on teaching kids to play the game of basketball the right way enlisted one of his good friends to run the days activities. Malcolm Leak who is the Head Basketball Coach at Burnley College made the journey down. Leak did not disappoint as he put the guys through an intense workout.

The day’s activities were concentrated on the basic fundamentals of basketball. (Step your game up) was the theme of the day. This means if you (Know the Game) then you should be stepping your game up!! Coach Jamison had this to say,” What a great day of basketball, we had kids come from Birmingham and Northampton. I think the good things that we are doing here at NULC with basketball it’s starting to be talked about and that’s a good thing. I will continue to give the youth great coaching and hopefully get the kids playing basketball at a higher level”

College student leads England squad to European Championships

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) student Sherry McCue will captain the England Under 19s Ladies Football team in the European Championships.

Sherry took the captains armband for the first time in February against Denmark, where she led the team to a 3-1 win at the new home of the English FA; St Georges Park in Burton upon Trent.

She continued her run of success as she played a full 90 minutes in the squads 'must-win' game again Norway this week.  The England team won 3-0, securing a place at the European Championships in August.

Sherry said: “It was a life changing moment in my football career to walk out and captain my country.  I’m continuing to train hard and prepare for the European Championships during the summer.”

Sherry was originally chosen to play for the Ladies Under 19s England Football Squad in January 2012 and has since worked hard to progress to captain the team.

Sherry, aged 18 from Market Drayton, is a member of the College’s award-winning Academy of Sport where she plays for the Academy’s ladies football squad and is in her second year studying the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence at College’s £60 million campus which features state-of-the-art sporting facilities including a gym, Sports Hall and 3G pitch.

Dave Sutton, Sports Development Officer at NULC, said: “I’ve coached Sherry for the past two years at NULC and from the first moment she joined the Academy of Sport I knew that with hard work, determination and the outstanding support from the College she would progress to have a successful career in football.”

Sherry is also part of the Academy of Sport’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), members of which receive benefits including financial support, free use of the facilities at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre and visits to university workshops.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College currently holds the title of West Midlands Sports College of the Year which was awarded by the British Colleges Sport in October 2012.

STARS SQUAD EVENT - 20 March 2013

The NULC STARS Squad met up with the other squads from North Staffordshire for an evening in March at Fenton 6th Form College.  The squad attended 2 sessions.  Helen Moors (School Games Organiser for South Stoke) and Craig Hallams (ex-international hammer thrower) went through a nutrition workshop, getting the squad to think about the diet that they have and how to change it, in order to improve their performance.

The second session was with a 2012 Olympic bronze medallist.  Sally Walton from the GB women’s hockey team came to deliver an inspirational talk about the journey she has been on to reach the pinnacle of her sporting career.  Sally talked about her disappointment at not being picked for the Beijing Olympics and the joy of being in the 2012 London Olympics and gaining an Olympic medal for Team GB.  The squad members found the talk very interesting and had lots of questions to ask Sally about her Olympic experience.  The Squad then posed for photos with Sally and got to hold her very heavy bronze medal!

Basketball academy players rub shoulders with the Harlem Globetrotters

On Monday 25th March Newcastle-under-Lyme College Basketball Academy and national league players were invited as VIP's to the world famous Harlem Globetrotters game in Birmingham. The invite came courtesy of the Academy coach, Shawn Jamison, who is a former Globetrotter himself. All the players were given court side tickets and were invited into the changing rooms before and after the game.
