NULC student wins at Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is celebrating after one of its students won Junior Individual of the Year at the recent Sports Personality of the Year Awards held by The Sentinel.

Hurdler James Taylor, aged 17 from Stoke, is a member of the NULC Academy of Sport and was nominated for the award by Academy Manager Trevor Humphreys.

James attended the glittering awards ceremony held at the King’s Hall in Stoke, where he was presented with his award by Port Vale Manager Micky Adams in front of the finest from North Staffordshire’s sporting world.

Trevor said: “We’re all delighted at James’ success. James is a young man that is determined to succeed and constantly raises the bar in his sport.  For James to be recognised for his achievements is fantastic and I know everyone here at NULC will support him as he goes on to achieve great things in his sporting career.”

James, who studies the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport at NULC, became the Midlands youth champion in August when he sped to a clear victory in the under-17’s 100m hurdles in 13.37 seconds. That same month, he also collected relay silver in the 4x100m sprint at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey.

Trevor continued: “I hope young people look at what James has achieved and are inspired to follow their sporting ambitions.  2012 is great year for British Sport and so far it has been a great year for sport at NULC.”
