Students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) have organised a special Paralympic-themed event to raise awareness of the challenges faced by Paralympic athletes.
Around 80 pupils from local high schools, including Sir Thomas Boughey and Trentham High School , will attend the event on Thursday 29 March at the Colleges £6 million Gordon Banks Sports Centre.
The event will provide the pupils with the opportunity to participate in a range of Paralympic-themed games, including Wheel Chair Basketball, Blindfolded Football, Seated Volleyball, Bocchia and Goalball.
The day has been organised by Sport Science students as part of the performance-based project element of their BTEC course.
Shelly Brown, Curriculum Manager for Sport, said: “The students have worked extremely hard to organise a large-scale professional event.
“All the students are interested in London 2012 and it’s great that we can incorporate the biggest British sporting event this year into their studies and give them the opportunity to see their plans to come to life in the community.”
Shelly added: “NULC has a growing reputation for sports participation and we’re delighted to be able to invite local school pupils to come to the College to meet with current students, sample the sports facilities and most importantly have fun whilst learning.”
Throughout the day, students from other courses at the College will be providing entertainment. Music Technology students will perform live DJ sets and A Level Dance students will perform an ‘Opening Ceremony’.
Visitors to the event will also have the opportunity to buy a raffle ticket in aid of the charity Blind for Sight, with prizes from local companies including Sainsbury’s, Trentham Estate and Vue Cinema.
NULC is a member of the London 2012 Get Set network, in recognition of its commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.
