Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC) Academy of Sport is celebrating after the Mixed Volleyball team made it through to the British Colleges National Cup Finals.
The Mixed Volleyball Squad overcame Middlesbrough College with a 2-1 final score to reach the British Colleges National Cup Final.
The Men’s squad also beat Middlesbrough College on the same day enabling them to reach the quarter finals of the National Cup.
The National Cup Finals will be held on Tuesday 24 April 2012, where TEAM:NULC will take on either Salford City College or Taunton College.
Trevor Humphreys Academy of Sport Manager said: “Week after week TEAM:NULC are coming home with tremendous scores and reaching the final stages of national competitions. The students from the NULC Academy of Sport are extremely dedicated and disciplined and continue to raise the standard of sport played amongst their peers. “
Trevor continued: “The coaches have been instrumental in the Volleyball teams’ success, putting in extra work and transporting the team all over the country to allow them to play.”
Along the way TEAM:NULC fought off strong competition from Colleges across the country including St Thomas More College from Birmingham, Dudley College, King Edward VI Sixth Form College from Stourbridge and Richard Huish College from Devon.

Elite sporting students meet with HRH the Duke of York
Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) was delighted to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of York to its campus.
The Duke of York visited NULC to help promote the work of colleges in providing high quality apprenticeships, work-based learning and business skills development.
After meeting local dignitaries in the College reception area, His Royal Highness was given a tour of the College by NULC Principal and Chief Executive Karen Dobson, accompanied by the Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Sir James Hawley.

During his tour of the College, the Duke took time to chat to Elite Sporting students from NULC’s The visit formed part of The Duke of York's work to encourage and inspire young people to develop the right skills, and to recognise and support the many apprenticeship schemes that are developing as a part of the Government's Skills and Innovation agenda.
He told students he hoped the College could help inspire them to "be more than you think you can be". The Duke of York added: "I can assure all of you young people that you have a great deal more potential than you probably realise or understand. Over the last 10 years I've been doing a huge amount for British business and I will continue to do so, because I believe in it, and I also believe you young people are the future of it."
Principal Karen Dobson said:"I am very proud of the staff that helped pulled everything together and of course all the students who have done themselves real credit."

TEAM:NULC Results- Wednesday 7th March
Yesterday marked another great day for the College as the Mixed Volleyball Squad overcame Middlesbrough College Middlesbrough to reach the quarter finals of the National Cup. A massive thank you must again go to staff members Ross Cope and Steve Sumnal who made it possible for the teams to compete.

College Basketball team reach national cup finals
The Finals Day will be held on Wednesday 28 March at Telford College of Art and Technology and will consist of two semi-finals games, a third and fourth place game and the final game to crown the winners of the competition.
Trevor Humphreys, NULC Academy of Sport Manager said: “We’re all immensely proud of what the team has achieved so far in the competition. They’ve worked extremely hard to ensure that NULC is recognised as a leader in the Basketball arena amongst colleges nationally.”
Along the way NULC have fought off strong competition from colleges across the country including Our Lady and St Chad from Wolverhampton, Telford College of Art and Technology, Cirencester College and Strode’s College from London
Trevor continued: “Basketball is becoming more and more popular amongst young people and I’m delighted that as a college we can offer students the opportunity to play and compete in Basketball at a national level.”

Elite Sports Students Receive Sports Scholarships Funding
12 Newcastle-under-Lyme College students who are part of the Elite Sports Performance Programme were successful in their applications to the colleges Sports Scholarship fund.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights Basketball Team featured in the Sentinel
Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights basketball squad who play in the England Basketball National League have been featured recently in the Sentinel.

It was also a busy day for the football teams connected to the Academy of Sport , especially the 1st team football who made the 8 hour round trip to Gateshead College in Newcastle upon Tyne . I would just like to say thanks for all their hard work.
