Newcastle-under-Lyme College triumph in national volleyball final

Newcastle-under-Lyme College has won volleyball's national knock-out cup, beating Middlesbrough College in the final.

NULC's mixed team of men and women started with a strong serve and built up a small lead that left Middlesbrough chasing the score throughout the game which finished 3-0.
The team comprised of captain Will Richardson, internationalists Rich James and Rosie Barley, Olivia Burton, Pieter Drijfhout, Evan Morris, Zara Lovatt, Kate Jones, Zakk Hadgett and Georgina Reah. The Most Valuable Player trophy was split between both Zakk Hadgett and Olivia Burton.
Said coach Ross Cope, Sport Lecturer Volleyball and Football Coach: "It was a deserving trophy to pick up for the team, who have trained well all year and Will Richardson who captained the team in his last opportunity."
Said NULC Academy of Sport manager Trevor Humphreys: "This has been a remarkable season for NULC sport. Not only is our mixed volleyball team top in the country, our men's basketball and volleyball teams and the women's cross country team are all national champions. And we have won several regional titles too. So, if you like sport, no matter what level, then our fantastic facilities and dedicated staff mean NULC is your college of first choice."
NULC Sports Academy programmes include football, basketball, netball, athletics/ endurance, rugby, volleyball and the Ian Woosnam Golf Academy which are centred at NULC's Gordon Banks Sports Centre. The college was West Midlands Sports College of the year in 2012 and 2014 and was rated by Ofsted as "outstanding" for sports, leisure and recreation.
