Newcastle-under-Lyme College men’s basketball team has been crowned National Cup Champions.
The victory marks an historic double as the team has already won the West Midlands Regional Championship and still has the chance to win the regional league.
The team took the championship in the finals against All Saints Academy of Cheltenham in London last week. Today (29th April) they play Gloucester College at home in the first of three games to decide the Association of Colleges West Midlands League Championship.
NULC beat Barking and Dagenham College in the national semi finals 80-74 and then won the finals by 87-83.
Basketball coach Shawn Jamison, former Harlem Globetrotter, said: "I'm very proud of the guys in what they were able to achieve this year. Earlier this season they were crowned West Midland Regional Champions and to follow that up by winning the National Cup is pretty amazing."
Said NULC Academy of Sport manager Trevor Humphreys: "This has been a remarkable season for NULC sport. Not only is our basketball team top in the country, our men's volleyball team and the women's cross country team are also national champions.
“And it’s not over yet as we are still in a number of other competitions including the national Ability Counts football finals. If you like sport, no matter what level, then our fantastic facilities and dedicated staff mean NULC is the college of first choice.”
NULC Sports Academy programmes include football, basketball, netball, athletics/ endurance, rugby, volleyball and the Ian Woosnam Golf Academy which are centred at NULC's Gordon Banks Sports Centre. The college was West Midlands Sports College of the year in 2012 and 2014 and was rated by Ofsted as "outstanding" for sports, leisure and recreation.
