Newcastle-under-Lyme College is sending a
record 54-strong squad to the Association of Colleges Sport national
championships this weekend.
The students will
represent both Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) and the West Midlands as
they qualified for the championships by winning their regional competitions.
Said NULC Principal Karen Dobson: “This is the largest squad from any
college to compete at the national championships so this really underscores our
position as the region’s top college for sport. Hats off both to our students
and coaching and support staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure peak
performance.”
The college sport national championships attracts teams from England and
Wales and is one of the largest annual sporting events in the country,
involving over 1,800 college students. It will be held at Bath between 27 - 29th
March.
The NULC squad comprises of the men’s and women’s volleyball teams, the
men’s and women’s basketball teams, four cross country runners (who took the
first four places in the regional competition) and international trampolinist
Aaron Lymer.
The West Midlands team will be captained by NULC’s volleyball player Zakk
Hadgett.
Said NULC’s Academy of Sport manager Trevor Humphreys: “This is a
tremendous advert for Newcastle-under-Lyme College. Basically if you like
sport, then this is the college for you whether it’s just for fun or you join
one of our sports academies or you compete at an elite level. We have something
for everyone and the best facilities. If you are thinking of applying to NULC,
then now is the time to do it.”
NULC Sports Academy programmes include football, basketball,
netball, athletics/endurance, rugby, volleyball and the Ian Woosnam Golf
Academy which are centred at NULC’s Gordon Banks Sports Centre. The College was West Midlands Sports College
of the Year in 2012 and 2014 and was rated by Ofsted as “outstanding” for
sports, leisure and recreation.
