Staffordshire FA Youth Cup.
(Semi Final)
Newcastle Town College Team FC 1 V Elsmere
Rangers FC 2
The game started with caution and both sides looked nervous,
with both teams trying to ensure that they did not concede an early goal, with
such an important game at stake. The
pace of the game appeared slow at times but Newcastle seemed to have more
possession although creating little and few chances to score, Until right on
half time when Callum Kenny made a good strong run down the right wing to pull
a cross back beautifully for Jake Braxton Lloyd to blast wide from the edge of
the penalty box, it should have 1-0! With so few chances in the first half that
was Newcastle best chance to score. Newcastle defended fairly well keeping
Elsmere’s No.9 quite with them having no clear chances on goal, Newcastle go in
the happier of the two sides.
Second half started much the same, however Newcastle
appeared to be getting a strong hold on the game and started to dominate in
possession. Newcastle continued to trouble the Elsmere Defence with Elsmere
struggling to get out of their own half.
12 minutes in and Callum Kenny is brought down just outside the 18 yard
box and up stepped Jake Braxton Lloyd who surely had to make amends for his
earlier miss which he did with a beautifully placed free kick, the keeper
having no chance. 1-0 for Castle. Castle continued to dominate and created a
number of decent chances but could not seem to finish. Elsmere never seemed to
pose a threat and were restricted to having only 1 shot during the game which
sailed well over Joe Mellors goal. The
game appeared to belong to Newcastle with only 20 minutes to go. Newcastle continued to threaten Elsmere’s
goal but still failed to put the game out of arms reach.
Elsmere knew they needed to make changes and so they did and
threw all 3 substitutions on that simply changed the game. The forward was simply unstoppable and
appeared to be in a league of his own, threatening every time he received the
ball. Our defence had kept Elsmeres
chances few and far between but with fatigue setting in and with the fresh legs
of Elsmeres subs eventually their substitute striker broke with real intent and
his strike beat Joe Mellor to come back off the underneath of the cross bar for
their left winger to finish on the line, 1 - 1 and the momentum was swinging in
the favour of Elsmere.
Newcastle were left to try and win the game by putting 2
attacking players on, John Ngindu and Robson Healy.
The game was set to go into extra time with 3 minutes to go
and Elsmeres Super sub again came up with the goods beating Newcastle’s centre
halves with shear blistering pace and power, with a great finish at the end, 1
V 2 to Elsmere.
Newcastle had one last go and a fantastic chance fell to Cal
Kenny straight from the KO, but his chance whistled wide and ‘that was that’.
OR was it?
It appears that the Super Sub was borrowed from ‘Shrewsbury
Town’ and not even signed by Elsmere? If
this is the case Newcastle may still yet appear in the final as the player
appears to be ineligible, along with 2 others to play in the competition.
