The ladies football team from Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s Academy of Sport have won the British Colleges Sport (BSC) West Midlands Cup.
The 16 strong squad travelled to Redditch United to face North East Worcestershire College in the BCS West Midlands Cup Final, where TEAM:NULC went on to win 3 -0.
Striker Dom Ford-Gordon scored two of the goals, with Rachael Ball sealing the 3-0 win for TEAM:NULC.
Dave Sutton, Sports Development Officer at NULC, said: “The win for the ladies football team is absolutely fantastic. They’ve trained hard throughout the year and faced some strong competition along the way, but winning the cup final is testament to their hard work and dedication.”
Amongst the winning team were Emily Horton (below left), aged 18 from Newcastle who plays for the England Ladies under 19’s squad, Jade Boulton (above left), aged 18 from Rode Heath who plays for the Wales under 18’s squad and Paris O’Connor, aged 17 from Middleport who is a member of the Stoke City FC Ladies squad.
Team captain, Paris O’Connor said: “To win the regional cup final is great, but we’re now focusing on the National Cup Final. We will be reviewing past games and training three times a week in the run up to the National Cup Finals. We really want to add a National win to the trophy cabinet.”
Newcastle-under-Lyme College currently holds the title of West Midlands Sports College of the Year which was awarded by the British Colleges Sport in October 2012.
In 2009 the College launched its Academy of Sport, which provides a wide range of opportunities to full-time students, including Sports Academies, Elite Sports Performance Programme, Sport Volunteer and Leadership Academy and Recreational Sports.
The Academy of Sport allows students the chance to study and pursue their sporting interests at the same time.
The Academy has had a record breaking year in 2012 with the honours list including awards such as:
• Basketball - Winners of West Midlands Performance League and National Cup Finalists
• Men’s Volleyball - West Midlands and National Champions and National Cup Winners
• Women’s Volleyball - West Midlands Champions
• Ladies Football - West Midlands Performance League Runners-up
• BCS National Championships – 23 students selected, 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal won
• Five students selected to play for National British Colleges squads in Netball, Men’s and Ladies Football and Rugby
