College helps school pupils achieve their sporting dreams

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is launching a new programme to encourage more high school pupils into sport.

Part of the NULC Academy of Sport, the Newcastle STARS programme works with talented young athletes from high schools across the Borough, helping them to nurture their sporting talent while offering them the best chance of achieving their full potential.

The new programme is being launched on Thursday 29 November, 6.30pm - 8.30pm in the College’s Auditorium at its main campus on Knutton Lane.

Deb O’Neill, Newcastle STARS Squad Co-ordinator, said: “The STARS programme was put together for pupils from all Newcastle high schools that are performing at a national standard in their chosen sport.

“As the West Midlands’ number one sports college, NULC is dedicated to raising the profile of sport and nurturing the potential of the talented young athletes we have in the local area, meaning it’s an ideal base for the STARS Squad.”

Over 100 local people have been invited to the event, along with three other STARS Squads from across Staffordshire. During the event, current Paralympian Tim Prendergast and retired Olympian Craig Heap will provide inspirational talks and workshops to the young aspiring athletes.

Previously funded by the Youth Sport Trust, the STARS programme faced funding cuts last year.

Deb added: “The funding cuts meant the programme faced an uncertain future, but the College has agreed to fund the Newcastle programme for the next year, ensuring that young local sports stars are able to receive expert coaching and access to top class sporting facilities to help them become world class athletes.”

The new programme allows the College to work with younger athletes in addition to the already successful Academy of Sport which is aimed at current college students. The NULC Academy of Sport has had record success since its launch in 2010, with students being selected to represent their country in a range of sports including Men’s Football, Ladies Football, Rugby and Netball.

College launches partnership with Premier League 4 Sport

Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones attended Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) to highlight the importance of initiatives which encourage young people to participate in sport.

The Trinidad and Tobago international was joined by England and Manchester Giants players Devan Bailey and David Watts along with the NULC Knights basketball team for the launch of a basketball project which will now form part of the hugely-successful Premier League 4 Sport scheme that has been in operation by Stoke City Football Club for three years.

Local youngsters will be able to take part in coaching sessions across the county after basketball joined hockey, badminton, volleyball and table tennis as one of the designated activities under the Premier League 4 Sport directive.

“This is a brilliant idea from Premier League 4 Sport,” exclaimed Jones after spending much of his time at the college playing with Team GB stars and the Newcastle Knights. “It’s so important to get young people playing sport.

“I was fortunate when I was young to be able to play so many different sports in the Caribbean and I loved basketball at school, even though I didn’t take it too seriously. For me, deciding to become a footballer was the right choice.

He added: “You can see the enthusiasm of the young people and it’s fantastic that they now have this support to play the sport.”

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager said: “Here at NULC we operate a Basketball Academy for our students and also run the Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights which is open to students and members of the community. We’re an inclusive College who with the support of Premier League 4 Sport can now offer sporting opportunities for high school pupils and members of the community to get involved in.”

The launch of the Premier League 4 Sport basketball sessions is the result of a partnership between the Stoke City Community Trust and the Newcastle Knights Basketball team supported by Newcastle-under-Lyme College.
