Football Academy prepare for national semi-final

The NULC/MMU football academy are busy preparing for the national semi-final of the Football Conference Youth Alliance Cup.

The team will face Charlton Athletic in the final, which will be held away at Charlton Athletics football stadium on Wednesday 30 March.

Members of the academy, spend four days a week studying and training at the Crewe campus and one day a week at NULC studying towards a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence).

Nigel Deeley, joint-coach, said: “Getting this far in the competition, as well other national competitions, is testament to the dedicated MMU and NULC staff who help support the students through every aspect of their education, from their academic studies right through to their attitude and fitness.”

College joins forces with local Rugby team

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has strengthen its sporting links with the sponsorship of the junior team at Newcastle Rugby Club (NUFC).

Here at NULC, we will work closely with the rugby club and have decided to sponsor the Clubs under 14s, 15s and 16s playing kits for the next two years.

Trevor Humphreys, NULC Academy of Sport Manager and Lecturer at the College said: “This is a great opportunity to work with a local sporting club to help enhance their youth side but also strengthen the College’s Rugby Academy.

The NULC Rugby Academy at the College is part of the NULC Academy of Sport. As part of the sponsorship the Rugby team play home games at the Clubs ground and the Club also offers a progression pathway for the students.

The NULC Academy of Sport gives students the chance to study and pursue their sporting interests at the same time. As well as Rugby, the opportunities for students include Football, Basketball and Netball Academies, an Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), a Sports Volunteering and Leadership Academy and a Coach Education Programme.

Triumph as football academy score place in semi-finals

The NULC/MMU Football Academy team faced Burnley College on Wednesday 9 March in the quarter finals of the British Colleges Sport (BCS) Elite National Cup.  After a disappointing own goal from the academy.  Jack Sherratt came out fighting with a brilliant goal to make the final score 2-0.  The win means that the NULC/MMU Football Academy will progress into the semi-final stage of the Cup. Well done to the whole team for a tremendous effort and good luck in the semi-finals.

Record Success at BCS Regional Championships

On the 7^th of February 2011 57 students represented the college at the British Colleges Sport (BCS) regional qualification tournament at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. This was a record number of students to represent the college at these games and is a testament to the emphasis that the college places on sport. The students competed in a number of sports such as Badminton, Squash, Table Tennis, Cross Country and Volleyball.

All the students competed extremely well and made the college proud with their commitment, attitude and sportsmanship. There were a number of major successes of the day as 13 progressed to the national tournament at Bath University in Squash, Table Tennis, Trampoline, Cross Country and Swimming.  

The following students will be competing for the West Midlands team at the National Championships:

• Natalie Slater- Table Tennis
• Naomi Yates and Lauren Harrison- Trampoline
• Sam Edwards- Swimming
• Sammey-Jo Daley Davies, Hannah Jones, Marie Oakley, Paige Machin, Steph Crowley, Georgina Holmes- Women’s Cross Country
• Tom Guy- Men’s Cross Country

This event marked the end of a successful autumn/winter regional tournaments programme for the college and demonstrates the college’s commitment to becoming one of the top sports institutions within the West Midlands. 

Football legend opens 7-a-side football league

NULC Basketball Academy helps launch new Nike Store

The NULC Academy of Sport Basketball Academy helped to launch the new Nike Store at Freeport, Talke on Thursday 3 February 2011.

The Academy took part in Basketball Academy demonstrations throughout the day and even received a gift voucher each from the store to thank them with their help during the event. The students will be helping out at future events at the Store along with Shawn Jamieson, the new Basketball Academy coach.

College welcomed to 2012’s ‘Get Set’ network

NULC is celebrating after it was officially welcomed in to London 2012’s Get Set network, in recognition of its commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has awarded the College with the status to acknowledge its involvement in the London 2012 education programme through the NULC Academy of Sport.

The NULC Academy of Sport gives students the chance to study and pursue their sporting interests at the same time.
