College student captains England squad

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) student Sherry McCue was selected to captain the England Under 19s Ladies Football team.

Sherry took the captains armband for the first time last week against Denmark, where she led the team to  a 3-1 win at the new home of the English FA; St Georges Park in Burton.

Sherry said: “It was a life changing moment in my football career to walk out and captain my country, especially as we won.  I’m continuing to train hard with the hope of being selected for the squad in the European Championships during the summer.”

Sherry was originally chosen to play for the Ladies Under 19 England Football Squad in January 2012 and has since worked hard to progress to captain the team.

Sherry, aged 18 from Market Drayton, is a member of the College’s award-winning Academy of Sport where she plays for the Academy’s ladies football squad and is in her second year studying the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence at College’s £60 million campus which features state-of-the-art sporting facilities including a gym, Sports Hall and 3G pitch.

Dave Sutton, Sports Development Officer at NULC, said: “I’ve coached Sherry for the past two years at NULC and from the first moment she joined the Academy of Sport I knew that with hard work, determination and the outstanding support from the College she would progress to have a successful career in football.”

Sherry is also part of the Academy of Sport’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), members of which receive benefits including financial support, free use of the facilities at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre and visits to university workshops.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College currently holds the title of West Midlands Sports College of the Year which was awarded by the British Colleges Sport in October 2012.
