Around 25 students were given free tickets for the England Under21 vs Sweden Under21 football match at Walsall FC and two minibuses full of Academy football players made the trip to Walsall’s Banks Stadium and watched England beat Sweden 4 – 0 in horrendous conditions. Mixed Volleyball team reach national cup final

Newcastle-under- Lyme College’s mixed volleyball squad managed to reach the final of the British Colleges Sport National Cup for the 2nd year running. TEAM: NULC, who were crowned champions, last year faced stiff opposition in the form of Middlesbrough College who made the 4 and half hour journey despite the weather conditions.
After a tough beginning TEAM: NULC managed to win the game 2 sets to nil and showed their class throughout the game beating a very good Middlesbrough team.
Newcastle-under-Lyme College is 1 of 6 National Satellite Academies for Volleyball England which allows the players extra training time, sports science support and sports therapy.
The final will now be played on the 2nd May at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering against either PETROC or Leyton 6th Form College.
The men’s squad are through to the last 16 and will again be looking to defend their national crown. If all goes to plan this will hopefully be another successful year for the college’s Volleyball Academy.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) student Sherry McCue was selected to captain the England Under 19s Ladies Football team.

Sherry took the captains armband for the first time last week against Denmark, where she led the team to  a 3-1 win at the new home of the English FA; St Georges Park in Burton.

Sherry said: “It was a life changing moment in my football career to walk out and captain my country, especially as we won.  I’m continuing to train hard with the hope of being selected for the squad in the European Championships during the summer.”

Sherry was originally chosen to play for the Ladies Under 19 England Football Squad in January 2012 and has since worked hard to progress to captain the team.

Sherry, aged 18 from Market Drayton, is a member of the College’s award-winning Academy of Sport where she plays for the Academy’s ladies football squad and is in her second year studying the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence at College’s £60 million campus which features state-of-the-art sporting facilities including a gym, Sports Hall and 3G pitch.

Dave Sutton, Sports Development Officer at NULC, said: “I’ve coached Sherry for the past two years at NULC and from the first moment she joined the Academy of Sport I knew that with hard work, determination and the outstanding support from the College she would progress to have a successful career in football.”
