England success on 2 fronts for college Netball player.

A Newcastle-under-Lyme college student has had success in being selected for 2 England squads in Netball. Ami Pickerill who plays for the college Netball Academy and is part of the Elite Sports Performance Programme is in her second year of studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. Ami has progressed through a number of trials to reach this fantastic achievement which have taken place over the last 4 months.
Ami has been selected for the England Under 19 Netball Europe Squad, and the British Colleges Sport England Netball Squad.

The Academy of Sport Manager, Trevor Humphreys said "this is a fantastic achievement for Ami and shows her dedication and commitment to playing Netball. We are lucky to have her at the college as part of the Netball Academy".

Good luck to Ami and everyone at the college wishes her well and hopes to see her in the full England really soon.

College student selected for England U19's Ladies Football Squad

A Newcastle-under-Lyme College students has been selected for the England Under 19's Ladies England Squad. Sherry McCue who is studying a BTEC in Sports Performance and Excellence has been selected to attend the England Women’s U19 Training Camp from Sunday 22nd until Thursday 26th January 2012. Sherry is also part of the college's Ladies Football Academy and Elite Sports Performance Programme.

We wish her the best of luck and hope to see her very soon in a senior England ladies shirt.

Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights Basketball team season so far.

The development of Basketball at Newcastle-under-Lyme College within the last year has been huge through the formation of Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights. It was approved to enter division four of the EBL and has been representing the college in the midlands structure of the competition during the 2011-2012 season.

The club is being coached and ran by former NBA and Harlem Globetrotter, Shawn Jamison, who is also the college’s Basketball Academy Head Coach. Shawn's update of the season so far is below:

"The Newcastle Knights have now completed the first half of there inaugural season in the EBL National league in division 4, and currently sit in 6th place in the West Midlands Division. As a coach I would have to say I am very proud of our guys so far, as they have shown the commitment to play at a higher level. In saying that I expect much more from the guys during the second half of the season. We have shown we can compete with every team that has been put in front of us this year, we just have to be smarter on the floor and make better basketball decisions. I am really looking for a strong finish from the guys for the second have of the season"

A Level student is selected for the England Rugby Squad

A Newcastle-under-Lyme College student has been selected for the England Rugby Squad after going through a series of trials. David Meakin, a scrum half or centre has been selected over 100's of students throughout the country to attend the England training camp on Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th December.

David, an A level student studying Maths, Chemistry, Physical Education, Physics and a member of the college's Rugby Academy said 'I was shocked to find out that I had been selected as the trials were really hard and the standard was really high'.

Trevor Humphreys, the Academy of Sport Manager talked very highly of David saying 'he is an extremely committed young individual who is realising his talent in rugby. It is further evidence that the support of the college is allowing students to reach their sporting potential'.



College Young Ambassadors trained and ready to go

Newcastle-under-Lyme College have 4 newly trained Young Ambassadors that are trained and ready to develop the Olympics ideals within college.

Ross Thompson, Bethany Wragg, Jamie Perry and Sam Botham attended a 1 day training event at the Ricoh Arena on the 1st December. The event was held by the Youth Sports Trust and the 4 students learnt how to develop activities and events within college to promote the Olympics.

The Young Ambassador movement commenced in 2006 following London’s successful Olympic bid where Lord Coe promised the UK would use the power of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire millions of young people to become involved in sport.

The role of a Young Ambassador involves increasing participation in school sport and PE, spreading the word of the Olympic and Paralympic Values – respect, friendship, personal excellence, courage, determination, inspiration and equality – and promoting the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

College Success at British Colleges West Midlands Championships

This Wednesday was a great day with all connected to the college sports teams as a number of squads and individuals triumphed at the West Midlands Regional Championships which were held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.  

Both the Men’s and Ladies Volleyball squads saw off competition from the rest of the West Midlands to be crowned West Midlands Champions. They were joined by Roxy Keshavarz in the ladies squash, Lucy Hayes in ladies Cross Country and Sam Botham in men’s cross country. These students join Natalie Slater who already qualified in ladies Table Tennis, and 2 swimmers, Grant Hamnett and Jemma Caulsey who were selected within the swimming squad.

All of these students will now compete for the West Midlands at the British Colleges Sport National Championships which will take place at Bath University from 30 March to the 1st April 2012.

Wednesday also saw a great result for the men’s 1st team football squad.

Colleges Hosts National AGM for BCS National Football League

Newcastle-under-Lyme College hosted the AGM for the British Colleges Sport National Football League on Monday 14th November. Over 70 delegates from colleges across the country attended the 1 day event which included national updates, regional workshops and practical sessions.

30 Members of the colleges Men's Football Academy took part in the practical session and received high level coaching from FA National Coaches.

The conference further re-enforced the college's reputation as a national leader in football development and forms part of the college being an FA Focus College, one of only 30 in the country.

Netball and Basketball Open Evenings for Year 11's

Newcastle-under-Lyme College's Academy of Sport are holding open evening training sessions for current year 11's who are thinking of studying at the college and joing and academy. It will give you a chance to meet the coach, existing players and new students like your self.

Netball Academy
Newcastle-under-Lyme College runs a successful Netball Academy for students aged 16-19 who study on a full-time programme at the college. The squad currently plays in the British College Sport West Midlands Performance league, and were crowned champions in 2010-11 for the first time.

The open evening training session will take place on the following:

Tuesday 29th November from 4.00pm- 6.00pm
Gordon Banks Sports Centre




Basketball Academy

Newcastle-under-Lyme College runs a successful Basketball Academy for students aged 16-19 who study on a full-time programme at the college. The squad currently plays in the British College Sport West Midlands Performance league, and there are progression routes for players to play for the Newcastle-under-Lyme College Knights Basketball club. This team plays in the National League Division 4 and is comprised of mainly students from the college.


The academy coach is former NBA and Harlem Globetrotter Shawn Jamison who has a vast amount of both playing and coaching experience.

This Wednesday saw the majority of teams playing which involved over 120 students competing.  It was a bad day for the college football teams as they all lost, however the Netball, Basketball and Volleyball teams all progressed to the next round of the national cups.

Elite Sports Students Receive Scholarship Funding

Fifteen of Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s (NULC's) brightest athletes benefited from the first round of the Elite Sports Performance Scholarship Fund. Each student had to apply via an application form which was supported by their coaches, and a written statement.

The Sports Scholarship fund, which is part of the Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), was created to provide student athletes the financial support that they may need. This could be for facility hire, equipment, training and transport costs.

The Elite Sports Programme (ESSP) was created to allow talented athletes to continue with their academic studies, whilst training and competing to the highest level. The ESPP is open to students if they have represented the county or above in a chosen sport within the last academic year.

If students become part of the programme they can expect the following benefits
  • Financial support from the college for training costs, transport and essential equipment (subject to applications).
  • Free use of the new college sports facilities such as the fitness suite and dance studio. 
  • University workshops at institutions such as Bath, Loughborough and Birmingham that are targeted at increasing your performance.
  • Sport Science Support
  • Physiotherapy, sports massage and rehabilitation services

TEAM:NULC Results

Students from the Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) Sport Academy have been competing in a range of games this week.

Our Basketball team managed to reach the quarter finals at the regional championships, a great achievement! Unfortunately, they were eventually beaten by the favourites, Birmingham Metropolitan College.

This week there was only a small number of fixtures due to the National Trials taking place in a number of sports. The results are as follows:-

NULC students represent West Midlands

A number of students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College have been successful in the regional British Colleges Sport West Midlands trials.  The successful students will now go on to represent the West Midlands and play against other regions to select a final national British Colleges Squad.

NULC students become STARS

A number of Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) students have been selected for a prestigious squad of athletes called the STARS programme.

The aim of the STARS programme is to form a group of elite performers in the North Staffordshire area who can join together to discuss their experiences and receive help from international athletes in coping with the demands of training whilst in full time education.

The selected students attended a launch evening on Wednesday 5 October at Fenton 6th Form College. The evening consisted of an introduction to the programme and workshops were delivered by former England and Great Britain athletes.

A total of 18 NULC students were chosen from a range of sports such as Football, Athletics, Volleyball and Canoeing, and all study full-time at the on a variety of courses.

The inclusion of these students further demonstrates NULC’s commitment to sporting excellence which now sees it ranked as one of the top college’s in the West Midlands.

Football Academy Coach heads to World Cup

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is proud to announce that Joint Head Coach of the MMU/NULC Football Academy; Nigel Deeley, will be travelling with the England U17 football team to the 2011 FIFA Mexico World Cup.

The tournament starts on the 18 June 2011 with the Cup Final on the 10 July 2011. Nigel will be working under Head Coach John Peacock and Assistant Coach Kenny Swain working on scouting, vetting and as a support coach.  There are 6 groups in the group stage with England in Group C  along side Uruguay, Canada and Rwanda.

Alongside his role as Joint Youth Coach for the MMU/NULC Football Academy, Nigel also works for the Football Association as a Talent ID scout for the North West

Five-a-side match raises money for charity

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) Staff and students joined forces with local supermarket Sainsbury's to raise £150 for charity. 

A charity five-a-side football match was organised to raise money for the North Staffordshire Adventure Playground charity.  Well Done to everyone from NULC and Sainsbury's that took part in the event.

NULC students become basketball stars

Budding basketball stars at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) have been given a huge boost after they have been entered into the England Basketball League (EBL).

NULC's Basketball Club, ‘NULC Knights’ has been approved to enter division four of the EBL and will be representing the West Midlands region in college sports competitions during the 2011-2012 season.

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager and Lecturer at NULC said: “We're overjoyed that NULC Knights, which is part of the College’s Academy of Sport programme, will be representing the West Midlands in the EBL – it is recognition of the College’s commitment to developing and enhancing its sports programme for students.”

Todd Stuart from the EBL said: “We welcome Newcastle-Under-Lyme College Knights and I’m sure they’ll be ready to impress in their rookie EBL year! Good luck to the team and the club.”

The season will begin in October, with the first match being held in the College’s new £5million Gordon Banks Sports Centre.

Team members of NULC Knights are students at the College and the general public, who have a talent and passion for the sport.
