Supermarket sports support for local College

Students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) are set to benefit from brand new sporting equipment thanks to a local supermarket.

Anthony Clegg, Manager of Sainsbury’s Newcastle-under-Lyme store, will visit the College on Wednesday 13 October at 11am to hand over the new football and basketball kits.

Sainsbury’s, which is due to open its new replacement store on 3 November at the College’s former Liverpool Road site, has donated football and basketball strips including tops, shorts and socks, along with two large kit bags.

The donation forms part of Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme, which has given over £1.3 million pounds worth of sports equipment and experiences to schools, nurseries, scout and guide groups and Clubmark accredited sports clubs across Staffordshire since the programme began in February 2005.

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager and Lecturer at NULC said: “We’re very grateful to Sainsbury’s for donating these kits. More and more students at NULC are choosing to take part in sport through our Academy of Sport programme, so the additional kits will come in very handy.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to build our relationship with Sainsbury’s in the future and are already planning a number of joint fundraising initiatives.”

Sainsbury’s Store Manager, Anthony Clegg says: “The location of our upcoming replacement store has provided a natural opportunity to work with the College over the past few months.

“For example, we’ve been holding interviews to recruit new store colleagues at the College’s conference facilities. This donation is a further example of our continuing partnership with the College, and demonstrates our commitment to making a difference in Newcastle-under-Lyme’s community.”

College sporting credentials boosted

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has received yet another boost to its growing sporting credentials by being named a Talented Athlete Sport Scheme (TASS) institution.

The TASS is a unique Government-funded sponsorship between sport and Further Education, which offers talented athletes funding to support them while they study. The project is part of the Government’s pledge to develop Britain’s future sporting stars in advance of London 2012.

The scheme has many fans including five-time Olympic Gold Medal winner Sir Steve Redgrave who said: “This exciting new scheme provides our most promising future Olympians with top quality sporting services and access to good quality training facilities.”

The award has generated a lot of excitement within the College. Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Co-ordinator, said: “This is a prestigious programme to be part of and is key to attracting high quality sports people to the College.”

The College hopes to attract more athletes like its current star Ben Williams, who recently won Gold in the Triple Jump at the Under 17 World Championships in Italy. The TASS scheme furthers the College’s growing reputation as an institute of sporting as well as academic excellence.

The College already boasts academies in basketball and netball, as well as two very successful football academies in partnership with Newcastle Town FC and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). The College is also home to the recently completed Gordon Banks Sports Centre, which houses a 4-badminton court sports hall, a dance studio and well-equipped fitness suite, all of which are available to the public.
