Student medal haul at national championships 2014

 

 

Over 20 students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s Academy of Sport represented both the college, and the West Midlands region at the British Colleges Sport national Champions this weekend.

The 36th BCS National Championships, the largest annual college national multi-sports championships of its kind, were held with great success from the 4th-6th of April.

It was a great turnout, with more than 2,000 students and staff from colleges across England, Scotland and Wales competing in fourteen different sports. 

For the fourth year running, the Championships were held at the University of Bath, which gave the young athletes access to some of the finest facilities in Britain as they competed in a total of thirty-nine events over the three days.

College athletes taking part were aged 16 to 19 years and each had qualified to represent one of the championship's eleven regional teams the East, East Midlands, London, North East, North West, Scotland, South East, South West, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humberside

Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s men’s volleyball team finished runners-up and won silver.  A further 2 silver medals for cross country and 2 silver medals for swimming were also won. The West Midlands finished in Bronze position overall.

A fantastic weekend was had by all and the students were a credit to the college, and it all further enhanced the reputation of the college on a national level.

Knights Takedown Hull Wasps in England Basketball Play-off Quarterfinals

Newcastle under Lyme College Knights have booked themselves a spot in the semi finals of the England Basketball Div 4 playoffs by beating the Hull Wasp 81-78. The Knights would jump out to an early lead after some very intense defensive play that would see them win the first quarter 28-14. The rest of the game would see the Knights in foul trouble as one match official decided he would take over the game and not allow the Knights to keep playing their aggressive style of defence. Hull would make a run and would not lose another quarter, but the stubborn Knights would never lose the lead in this encounter, and would go on to be victorious.

Coach Jamison had this to say," I am proud of my guys, they held off a good Hull team and played through some questionable officiating. I think we lost or way down the stretch of today's match but we will make adjustments and be better."

The Knights now turn their attention to the semi finals where they will face BC Medelynas London Sunday at 2:00. The action will take place at Leyton Youth Centre, this will be the Knights second trip to London for a Semi Final game this year!! We look forward to the fans continued support and hope to see you in London on Sunday. Details for venue will be posted below.

STARS SQUAD MEET THE CLASSROOM MEDICS – MARCH 2014

The North Staffs STARS squads from Newcastle, Staffs Moorlands, North and South Stoke all came together for a night of physiological testing at Stoke Sixth Form College with a company who specialise in testing pupils in a range of tests.

Tom Warrender, founder of Classroom Medics, explained the tests to the squad and gave some insight into the World and Olympic Champions that use this testing in their own performance training.  The tests included the Batak reaction board, ECG and heart rate monitoring, rowing test, handgrip strength test, watt bike, and explosive jumping power. 

As to be expected, the competition amongst the STARS squad members was very intense, with each competitor trying to outdo each other on the physical tests.  Some parents could also not resist a go on some of the tests and the BATAK reaction board proved to be the most popular and addictive game!

The session was great fun, as well as educational and gave the students something to think about with the results from their own tests.  We hope that the Classroom Medics will be able to come to us again in the future.

FLOODLIT League Match Report Monday 17th March

Birmingham City 0  V  1 Newcastle Town College Team FC  (After Extra Time)

On Monday Newcastle faced their next stern challenge, taking on the mighty Birmingham City on their home soil.

With Stew Dickin and Alex Cambell suspended and Dave Jones awaiting International clearance this was going to prove difficult.

 

The main focus for Newcastle was to make a good, positive start to the game and we certainly did that.  Although the first half was very close, with not many chances falling to either side.  Newcastle dominated overall without creating any real chances.  Newcastle did have a shout on a penalty decision when Cal Kenny was clearly bought down in the box as he was about to pull the trigger for a shot.

 

The Second half proved much the same with both sets of players fully commited.  The pitch was not conjusive to quality football at all.  It was hard and bobbly and neither team could get the ball down easily and sculpt themselves a chance.  With Extra Time looming, Newcastle changed their formation and bought on Robson Healy to provide some pace and Kev Davies to provide a more direct approach.  This opened the game up a little bit – but still no real chances either end.  

Extra time could not be prevented and Newcastle took the decision to try and win the game there and then, on came Evan Ofori for added pace.

4 mins into the second half of ET and a great ball by Kev Davies split Birminghams defence to find John Ngindu who in turn managed to pull his cross back from the bye line – it bobbled n bounced and was fortunate to find Robson Healy at the far post unopposed to slot home calmly. 0 V 1 and 10 mins remaining.  Newcastle’s hopes were helped when Birminghams left back was sent off for a second bookable offense.  Birmingham pushed everyone forward to try and salvage the game, but Newcastle held firm and defended extremely well to bring home the victory.
