Table Tennis success!

The NULC Academy of Sport Table Tennis team finished in joint 3^rd at the County Cup Tournament narrowly missing out on progressing to the 4 Counties Tournament later in the year. 

The boys played 24 games winning a total of 14 between them.

The team consisted of Michael Mccafrey, Joe Smith, Mark Bourne and Carl Bachelor.

Sport staff became 'Mo Bro's' for charity

Four members of male staff from NULC took part in Movember, a national campaign to raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity. 

The staff included Ross Cope, Steve Sumnal and Steve Teasdale from the Sport department and David Matthews, a member of the Senior Management Team at NULC.

Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, aimed at highlighting male health issues, specifically prostate cancer.

The ‘Mo Bros’ started their moustache growing challenge on 1 November clean shaven and then had the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache.

A shave-a-thon took place on 1 December at Transform Salon and Spa at the College where Level 2 Beauty students helped to remove the month-long moustache growth!

Over £1000 was raised by the staff for The Prostate Cancer Charity.

Children in Need 2010

Staff and students at NULC dressed up in outrageous costumes and took part in a range of activities to raise money for Children in Need.

Fun activities included ‘Pudsey’s Fundraising Grotto’, whilst some students raised cash to have their legs waxed – Ouch!

The College has so far raised over £900 and all proceeds will go to Children in Need.

Students selected for national rugby trials

Three students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) have been selected to try out for the British Colleges Sport (BCS) England rugby squad.

Tom Westwood, Vurani Vuki and Levi Waqa, who are all aged 18, will go on to the next set of trials at Warwick University on the 5 December.

National swimming success for NULC student

A swimmer from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has achieved a silver medal in a national competition.

Sam Edwards, aged 18 from Brown Edge competed at the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) national finals on the 29 and 30 October 2010.

Sam said: “Individually I competed in the 200m Freestyle relay, where I won the silver medal. Overall the division that I competed with finished second overall after coming in fourth place last year.”

The Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP) was introduced by the College as part of the NULC Academy of Sport to allow talented athletes to continue with their academic studies, while training and competing to the highest level. The ESPP is open to students who have represented the county or above in a chosen sport within the last academic year.

He continued: “Being part of the ESPP ensures that I have the training and support that I need to succeed at this level.”

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager at the College, said:” Sam has worked extremely hard to get physically fit for the competition and his success is testament to his hard work and dedication.”

Football Development Centre - next match

As part of the colleges Football Development Centres programme the first team have a game against Stoke City Youth team on Wednesday 17 November at 1pm  at Claytonwood where the Stoke City Youth team train. Supporters are welcome to come down and support the team against extremely tough opposition. It is hoped that a similar game will take place against Port Vale in the New Year.

NULC student wins boxing competition

Ex NULC Student Nathan Russo boxed his way to victory by beating his component in a competition which has previously been won by the likes of Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan.
His boxing victory meant he was qualified to enter the national semi-finals.
Nathan is now a Staffordshire University student and is currently in his first year of a sports coaching development degree.
