Knights take on London Lituanica in semi-final

Knights impress but fall short in semi final

NULC made the trip to London on Sunday to take on London Lituanica in the much anticipated Semi Final match. As the game got underway it looked as it would be business as usual for the London team, but they quickly found out that this was not going to be the case. The stubborn Knights would show London that they were not going to go down without a fight. London had built up an early 20 point lead but that was quickly reduced by some very accurate 3 point shooting from Laz Thompson and Joshua Dos Santos. As the game progressed the standing room only crowd got involved as the Knights fans took issue with some rather bizarre officiating at times. The Knights would continue to fight but in the end they would fall short 90-76. The final score would not reflect what the Knights accomplished on this great day of basketball.
Coach Jamison had this to say” My guys were tested today and as far as I’m concerned they passed. They came to play on the big stage and were not intimidated by London. We have a good team that will continue to get better. I’m also very happy that some of the guys got a chance to play in front of their families in London, also a special mention to the fans who rode down with us you were awesome!!
Special mention to Little Shawn for winning the half time shootout.”

Borussia Teeth Win NULC Team Nineteen Cup

Newcastle Under Lyme
On the 12th of December NULC Team 19 were involved in a cup week. It was a bitterly cold day and all games were played in high spirits even though the conditions were poor.

Pictured below is the winner of the cup Borrusia Teeth after they celebrated the victory in a penalty shoot-out. Their road to the Final was quite tough as in the group stages they drew their first game 0-0 but then destroyed the next opponent 4-0 which made them go through as the second best placed team.
 Borussia Teeth

In the Semi final they played winners of the league Murder on Zidane Floor. It was a tense game and with only a couple of minutes left Kevyn Davies (2nd from left) struck to open the deadlock with a lofted ball that eluded the goalkeeper and went into the back of the net. A further goal in the last minute was scored to make the semi-final 2-0.

They were up against Hangover 96 in the final and after a stalemate with little chances it went to penalties. The hero was Borussia Teeth’s Goalkeeper as he saved 2 out of the 3 penalties and made sure that they progressed through to the tournament at St George’s Park in the summer and win the NULC Team 19 cup.

Local student signs pro football contract

A student studying sport at Newcastle-under-Lyme College has signed a professional contract with Crewe Alexandra Football Club.

John Johnston, aged 18 from Silverdale signed the contract following a series of trials where he was put through his paces before the Railway Men’s Manager Steve Davis deciding to offer John a one year professional contract.

The former Newcastle Community High School pupil plans to continue his studies at college alongside his professional football career.  John joined NULC in September 2012 where he studied the Level 2 Diploma in Sport before progressing to study the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Coaching and Fitness) in September 2013.  John is in his first year of the two year course.  He said: “I really enjoy college, I have a good group of friends and the staff have been fantastic in developing me both as player on the pitch as well as with my studies.  I want to continue studying at NULC as it’s important to me to have the professional qualifications needed for a career in coaching later in life.”

Shelley Brown, Head of Faculty for Vocational Studies at NULC, said: “The sports provision available at NULC is outstanding, we have top class facilities, industry level coaching and inspirational teaching, all of these factors work hand in hand to provide students like John with the best opportunities of succeeding in their chosen career path.”

Whilst studying at NULC, John is also an active member of the College’s multi award winning Academy of Sport, where he played for the College’s Football Academy against colleges from across the country in the British Colleges Sport (BCS) league.

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager, said: “We’re all extremely proud of John’s success, he has shown commitment and hard work to training as well as his studies.  The hard work is really paying off as he signs a professional contract for a local club, showing fellow youngsters what is possible if you train and study at NULC.”

The College’s latest Ofsted report was published last week which ranks the College’s sport provision as ‘outstanding’.  The report praises the sport departments ‘innovative teaching methods’ and ‘aspiration teaching’, stating that ‘teaching, learning and assessment are outstanding, which leads to high success rates that are substantially above national averages for the majority of vocational courses.’
