Football Academy Coach heads to World Cup

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) is proud to announce that Joint Head Coach of the MMU/NULC Football Academy; Nigel Deeley, will be travelling with the England U17 football team to the 2011 FIFA Mexico World Cup.

The tournament starts on the 18 June 2011 with the Cup Final on the 10 July 2011. Nigel will be working under Head Coach John Peacock and Assistant Coach Kenny Swain working on scouting, vetting and as a support coach.  There are 6 groups in the group stage with England in Group C  along side Uruguay, Canada and Rwanda.

Alongside his role as Joint Youth Coach for the MMU/NULC Football Academy, Nigel also works for the Football Association as a Talent ID scout for the North West

Five-a-side match raises money for charity

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) Staff and students joined forces with local supermarket Sainsbury's to raise £150 for charity. 

A charity five-a-side football match was organised to raise money for the North Staffordshire Adventure Playground charity.  Well Done to everyone from NULC and Sainsbury's that took part in the event.

NULC students become basketball stars

Budding basketball stars at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) have been given a huge boost after they have been entered into the England Basketball League (EBL).

NULC's Basketball Club, ‘NULC Knights’ has been approved to enter division four of the EBL and will be representing the West Midlands region in college sports competitions during the 2011-2012 season.

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager and Lecturer at NULC said: “We're overjoyed that NULC Knights, which is part of the College’s Academy of Sport programme, will be representing the West Midlands in the EBL – it is recognition of the College’s commitment to developing and enhancing its sports programme for students.”

Todd Stuart from the EBL said: “We welcome Newcastle-Under-Lyme College Knights and I’m sure they’ll be ready to impress in their rookie EBL year! Good luck to the team and the club.”

The season will begin in October, with the first match being held in the College’s new £5million Gordon Banks Sports Centre.

Team members of NULC Knights are students at the College and the general public, who have a talent and passion for the sport.

NULC hold first annual athletics championships

The Academy of Sport at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) will be holding the first annual college Athletics Championships on Wednesday 25th May.

The venue is Northwood stadium and the event begins at 1.00pm and will finish at around 4.00pm.

All NULC students aged 16-19 are free to enter any event and transport will be provided.

The Championships also acts a trial for the West Midlands Regional College Championships and a college Athletics Squad will be chosen from this event.

The events are as follows:

100m, 200m , 400m, 800m, 1500m, Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, Javelin, Discuss, Shot Put, 4 x 100m relay

If you are interested in entering any of these events then please drop into the Academy of Sport Office in the Gordon Banks Sports Centre to pick up a registration form.
