College holds conference for Young Ambassadors of the future

The College is inviting nine local schools to an interactive sport conference aimed to encourage them to take part in sport volunteering in the community.

The conference, which is being hosted at the College’s brand new £60 million campus on Wednesday 20 October, from 2pm - 5pm, is part of the Youth Sports Trust’s national Young Ambassador Scheme.

Young Ambassadors are officially part of London’s promise to the world to use the power of the 2010 Olympic Games and Paralympics to inspire millions of young people to choose sport.
Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager and Lecturer at NULC said: “This interactive conference will comprise of a selection of training workshops, talks, practical sessions and talks with current NULC sport students.”

He continued: “Tom Roden and Michaela Bradbury, who are two of our selected Young Ambassadors, will be taking part in the conference and talking to students about the advantages of getting involved in the programme!”

NULC currently runs a Sports Volunteering and Leadership Academy, including the “Step into Sport” programme, which is designed to provide high quality support and development for young leaders and volunteers who are committed to volunteer work within their school and community.

By the time the Olympic Games and Paralympics take place in 2012, more than 5,000 young people from across the UK will have been through the Young Ambassador programme, which is managed by the Youth Sport Trust on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

During the conference, school students will also have the opportunity to join the Associate Membership Scheme at NULC. By signing up they can get involved in sports tasters at the College and hear about the College’s latest successes and general sports news.

Supermarket sports support for local College

Students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) are set to benefit from brand new sporting equipment thanks to a local supermarket.

Anthony Clegg, Manager of Sainsbury’s Newcastle-under-Lyme store, will visit the College on Wednesday 13 October at 11am to hand over the new football and basketball kits.

Sainsbury’s, which is due to open its new replacement store on 3 November at the College’s former Liverpool Road site, has donated football and basketball strips including tops, shorts and socks, along with two large kit bags.

The donation forms part of Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme, which has given over £1.3 million pounds worth of sports equipment and experiences to schools, nurseries, scout and guide groups and Clubmark accredited sports clubs across Staffordshire since the programme began in February 2005.

Trevor Humphreys, Academy of Sport Manager and Lecturer at NULC said: “We’re very grateful to Sainsbury’s for donating these kits. More and more students at NULC are choosing to take part in sport through our Academy of Sport programme, so the additional kits will come in very handy.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to build our relationship with Sainsbury’s in the future and are already planning a number of joint fundraising initiatives.”

Sainsbury’s Store Manager, Anthony Clegg says: “The location of our upcoming replacement store has provided a natural opportunity to work with the College over the past few months.

“For example, we’ve been holding interviews to recruit new store colleagues at the College’s conference facilities. This donation is a further example of our continuing partnership with the College, and demonstrates our commitment to making a difference in Newcastle-under-Lyme’s community.”
